Lady, an Irish Setter puppy, is leading a simple life on a farm in Ohio during the 1940’s. Lady’s biggest desire is to become an expert hunting dog like her mother. She has no idea that her life is going to take her down a path where she will find herself in the middle of incredibly dangerous situations, including a world war. On several occasions, Lady will have to find the courage to risk her life in order to save someone she loves. The loyalty and bravery that Lady shows throughout her lifetime illustrate what it truly means to have the heart of a hero.

My take on this book:
Heart of a Hero by Billi Tiner blends together action, adventure and the unfailing loyalty of a wonderful dog named Lady to create a story that captures the heart and won't let go. As an animal lover, especially dogs I was immediately drawn into the story of Lady, and was excited to learn that the story was based on an actual dog that served in the military.  I really enjoyed seeing the story told thru the eyes of the animals, and honestly felt like the author did a wonderful job of transitioning  between animals and people. I found the historical aspects of this story to be quite informative, while I knew about dogs serving in the military this fictionalized story seemed very realistic in the way that it might have been done. I really want to learn more about the history of animals in the military. A quick easy read that is geared toward young readers but will certainly appeal to all age levels. I would caution that some situations are a bit intense so I would caution parents of younger children to perhaps read the book first. Overall a wonderfully written story that actually was quite emotional at times, while I knew what would happen at the end it didn't keep me from shedding a few tears. An added bonus is that the author provides a sneak peek of  another of her books titled Welcome Home, and it sounds like another riveting read, one that I can't wait to read!
