The Calling by Suzanne Woods Fisher

Bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher delivers her trademark twists, turns, and tender romance in this delightful and exciting visit to the deceptively quiet community of Stoney Ridge.
Twenty-year-old Bethany Schrock is restless. Her love life has derailed, her faith hangs by a thread, and she is spending the incredibly hot summer days wading through a lifetime’s accumulation of junk at the home of five ancient Amish sisters. About the only thing that holds her interest is the spirited and dangerously handsome Jimmy Fisher–and he seems bent on irritating her to no end.
When the sly old sisters and a guest at the Inn get Bethany involved in running the local soup kitchen and starting a community garden, she suddenly finds herself wondering, Shootfire! How did that happen? Despite her newfound purposefulness, a gnawing emptiness about a childhood mystery continues to plague her. Encouraged by Jimmy Fisher, she will seek out the answers she craves–and uncover a shocking secret that will break her heart, heal it, and point her to love.

My take on this book:
Suzanne Woods Fisher is one of my favorite author's, and reading "The Calling" reminds me why. She writes her characters like they are old friends, making me connect with them, hoping that their lives will work out for the best, and when I come to the end of a story, I find myself missing them, and hoping to see them again in another story. With The Calling we get the story of Bethany Schrock, who is dealing with her fair share of issues. She is dealing with the loss of her father, abandoned by her mother. Added to that is the fact that she isn't sure where her brother is. Not Amish issues but real issues is what always makes Ms. Fisher's characters stand out. As the pages of this story unfolds we learn that Bethany is a spunky character, dealing with things that could plague Amish or English,it's that sense of realism that keeps me coming back time after time to see what trials and triumphs that Suzanne's characters will face. While the main character is Bethany, there are several secondary characters that drive the story along, each one has their own story, some are a bit eccentric, but all are very easy to relate to. I found myself totally engrossed in the story involving the five sisters and the secrets that they had held for oh so long. While this is the second book in The Inn at Eagle Hill I felt like the author provided enough background information that I could have read it as a stand alone, although I highly recommend both books in the series. Fans of Amish fiction will devour this one, but anyone looking for a character driven story with plenty of twists along with a few laughs and tears to boot will enjoy this one!
