Charlotte Logan, affectionately called Charlie, spent her adolescent years under the control of the Grey Nuns. Now, her free spirit needs to be set loose. When her confined surroundings challenge her sense of adventure, she uses the art of manipulation to join a small wagon train heading west to the Fraser River in search of gold. Travelling across untamed land brings new relationships and the discovery of her place in the world. When adventure turns to danger, Charlie finds her source of strength in the middle of gunfights, kidnappers, and a battle for her relationship against the temptress called gold.

My take on this book:
Freedom Reins by E.M. Spencer gives us the story of eighteen year old Charlotte (Charlie) Logan.Charlie has suffered more than her fair share of loss, and often felt confined by the strict rules of the nuns at the Saint Vincent orphanage where her father's friend  Big Jim Mulligan took her after the death of her pa.Now Big Jim has come to tell her he is headed west for gold. Charlie insists on going along and wants to take her friend Dusty too.Big Jim  begrudgingly agrees, There are seven traveling by wagon train, but it's William (Will) Tanner that Charlie finds herself drawn to, thing is there is someone from his past that want's revenge and they don't care who they hurt in the process.

Freedom Reins by E.M.Spencer is such a visually stimulating story
that brings the characters, terrain and action to life, which made it a page turning adventure! From the buffalo hunts Charlie's father went on to the men panning for gold the authors descriptions made me feel as if I had stepped back in time and was watching history in the making. Well fleshed characters drew me in from the first  pages, I had to know what would ultimately happen with Charlie, who never let anything dampen her spirit, or her faith in God.  The story that developed between Will and Charlie was great, and I only hope that perhaps the author will give us a follow up because I feel like the characters in this story still have plenty of adventure left. A wonderfully written wild west historical adventure, filled with a bit of suspense and a splash of danger, that includes shoot ups, a kidnapping and Indians, that is also a coming of age story where we glimpse Charlie's grit and faith. A story that will certainly appeal to adults but is a good clean read that would probably be enjoyed by teens that enjoy historical adventures as well!

  1. Hi Brenda, I also loved E.M. Spencer's book Freedom Reins. She's a dedicated researcher and left me of the same mindset as you, "watching history in the making". You might like to know that your prediction of a sequel is being constructed. She's digging on the research as is her style.
