Elizabeth is at a crossroad. She’s been given the chance to experience life outside of her community, away from the responsibility to care for her eight younger siblings, but Elizabeth Bontrager can’t decide which road to take. Goshen has its charms and pressures, but Paradise, Pennsylvania, sounds . . . well, like paradise. And it’s also home to her Englisch friend, Paula. Decision made. Elizabeth is Paradise bound.
But will the small town live up to its name? When Elizabeth meets Paula’s friend, Bruce, she quickly learns he wants more than a friendship. And the same might be true of Saul Miller, her new boss at the country story that sells Amish products to the Englisch community. As the two compete for her attention, Elizabeth is surprised to realize she misses her family and becomes even more uncertain about where she belongs. She has a choice to make: return home or embrace this new life and possibly a new love?
My take on this book:
Twenty year old Elizabeth Bontranger is the oldest of nine children and between work and helping her mamm she feels like she just might never have time to date and find a husband of her own. When we meet her she is boarding a bus making a life altering change, she is leaving Goshen, Indiana headed for Paradise, Pa,for a visit with her English friend Paula, whom she had been corresponding with. She meets Saul Miller on the bus trip and finds out that he is from Paradise. Within days of arriving she gets a job working at Saul's father's store. Saul wants to get to know her better, thing is Elizabeth has also caught the attention of an Englisher. Will Elizabeth return home to Goshen, or has she found what she is looking for in Pennsylvania ?Elizabeth really just wanted to experience life for herself. She had been so busy being a caretaker that she never had any time for herself, so I could understand why when her pen-pal friend Paula invited her to come to PA she jumped at the chance, even though it was out of character for Elizabeth. Thing is she felt guilty about leaving what she considered her responsibilities behind. From the first night in the city when she finds something in her suitcase that her younger sister Sadie put there she starts feeling homesick. She doesn't let that dissuade her though and gets a job working for Saul's father in his store. Having never dated back home she soon finds two men interested in her, which had me wondering which choice she would make. The plot moves along at a brisk pace, with enough twists to keep it interesting. The author allows the characters to grow and change as the story progresses, and while I felt like I might know what would happen I really wasn't sure. The ending really left me anxious for the next book in this series. I was delighted to find a few Amish recipes included with this book. The author also includes a glossary which is helpful for anyone who has never read an "Amish" story. Discussion questions make this a great group read. A Road Unknown is the first book in Barbara Cameron's newest series Amish Roads, and anyone who has ever read anything by this talented author knows you're in for a real treat. Descriptive writing, and realistic characters make her books a joy to read, the inspirational messages that are often woven in about family and faith always touch the heart, and the romance is always sweet and touching. My only complaint is having to wait for the next book in the series!
