A rogue black stallion. A sacred white buffalo. Mysterious night voices. Megan Gillespie returns to Wyoming to fulfill a promise. Nothing more. Yet when the unexplainable happens, she is drawn into the intrigues surrounding her uncle's ranch...intrigues that escalate the longer she stays. How can prized mares simply vanish? Who is the Native American that appears at night? Why is her uncle determined to keep her from leaving? Torn between the desire to escape and the need to resolve these long-held secrets, Megan uncovers truths that threaten her life...and stir her to the depths of her soul.

My take on this book:
Megan Gillespie had only been nine years old when her parents and aunt were killed in a car accident. Her uncle Daniel O'Connor took her for a few months to live on the Double O ranch in Wyoming, but then sent her to live with an aunt and uncle in Florida. Her uncle had always bailed her out when it came to money so now at the age of 26 she makes a promise to her uncle Daniel to come back to Wyoming for three months. When Jack Crawford, her uncle's ranch foreman meets her to escort her to the ranch, she finds herself in the midst of a group of cowboys capturing a rogue black stallion. Turns out Daniel believes this stallion has been leading off some of his prize mares, and he wants it to stop, but the methods of the horse trainer leaves much to be desired where Megan is concerned and she decides to try and take matters into her own hands by sneaking out at night to tame the stallion. When she meets a mysterious Native American one night, one that seems vaguely familiar can she figure out who he is and what he wants? There are more than a few strange goings on at the Double O Ranch. Will Megan be able to tame the wild stallion, and what lengths will she go to in order to protect him? What about her uncle what secrets is he keeping and what are his true plans for getting her back to Wyoming? Will Megan go back to Florida  or will she find a reason to stay in Wyoming?

I must admit I usually lean more toward historical western fiction but Ms. Zogg writes such a compelling contemporary story that I became so invested in the story and characters that I had to know what would happen. The authors descriptive writing brings the setting to life making it easy to envision the scenes as they unfold. The beginning pages of the story had me thinking that Megan wouldn't fit in, but boy was I wrong. She was totally suited for ranch life, with plenty of spunk and a drive and determination to do what was right. I couldn't help but wonder if romance was in the cards for Megan. Interesting multi-layered characters and a plot that had a spiritual/fantasy feel to it made this a very satisfying read! I am looking forward to reading more from this talented author!
