My take on this book:
After picking up "The Queen," I realized that it is actually the fifth book in the Patrick Bowers Thriller series. Having never read anything by Steven James, I wondered whether I would be able to follow the story. Well no problem there! The story pulled me in from the beginning pages, although it did take me awhile to figure out who the characters were.
The story starts out with Patrick Bowers on a case that involves serial killer Richard Basque, someone who was let out of prison on a fluke and then started killing again. Basque has been eluding the authorities for six months, but they realize that he has a partner and they think they are about to close in on him. This happens in the first fifteen pages or so, but then we switch gears when Patrick is called to go to a case where a wife and daughter are dead, and the husband is missing.What he thinks should be a simple case escalates into something much more!
The plot in this story moves along at a very brisk pace.There is plenty of suspense, a bit of romance, as well as family issues that kept the story from ever having a down time. I loved the writing style, and it was interesting to see what made Patrick Bowers tick.I would caution that there are some vivdid descriptions of violence and crime scenes that aren't for the squeamish, although for me I felt like those scenes made the story all that much more realistic. The ending left me anxious for the next book, and hopefully I will be able to read the first four books so that I can be caught up on the series before the next book comes out.
