From the back cover:
She wants to change the world.
He wants to change her mind.
It's the beginning of a new century at Lake Manawa resort in Iowa, but some things never change. When Emily Graham's meddlesome aunts and grandmother take it upon themselves to find her a husband among the resort guests, the spunky suffragist is determined to politely decline each and every suitor. She has neither the time nor the need for a man in her busy life.
Carter Stockton, a recent college graduate and a pitcher for the Manawa Owls baseball team, intends to enjoy every minute of the summer before he is forced into the straitlaced business world of his father.
When their worlds collide, neither Emily nor Carter could have guessed what would come next. Will Carter strike out? Or will Emily cast her vote for a love that might cost her dreams?
My take on this book:
"A Great Catch," is the second book in the Lake Manawa Summers series but can easily stand alone, in fact I hadn't heard of this series until picking up this book but had no problems jumping right in.
Twenty-two year old Emily Graham wants women to be able to vote, and does whatever she can to further the cause including writing articles for the Woman's Standard. She isn't looking for love, but her family thinks that she should find a man and settle down, and they try and do their part to play matchmaker. When she literally runs into Carter Stockton, someone she hasn't seen since high school, sparks start to fly, and she starts to have feelings for him.
Carter Stockton is fresh out of college, and is expected to join his brother working at the bank in the fall, but for the summer he is pitching for the Manawa Owls. When Emily rolls into him at the skating rink, he can't quit thinking about her. When she arranges for a woman's baseball team to play against the Owls, someone needs to teach Emily how to play ball, and that someone is Carter. Will the two find love or strike out?
I loved the setting and time period for this one. Set in 1901 in Iowa I felt like I was transported back in time. I found the characters in this story very enjoyable. Emily is so easy to relate to, she is accident prone, and at the age of 22 her elderly aunts are determined to find her a husband, whether she wants one or not. I loved her aunts, they were so funny. Carter was such a gentleman, who depended on God for guidance, while Emily believed that she didn't have time for God.
The baseball, romance, and humor all add up to make this book the perfect summer read. This book defiantly hit a home run for me!
A complimentary copy of this book was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
