Mattie Diener can barely keep it together. A young Amish widow and mother of two young children, she faces the lingering heartbreak of lost love, her son’s mysterious illness, and a torrent of accusations that threaten to undo her.
Bo Lambright is a fast-rising social services investigator whose high-society mother won’t rest until she finds his Mrs. Right. Despite Bo’s worldly success, the raw ache of a shadowy past and a series of unsettling dreams have left him reeling.
When Mattie and Bo cross paths, all signs point to disaster. Yet as they face a crucible of trials and tragedies together, longings begin to stir that seem destined only to end in more heartbreak. Is a miracle possible—not only of healing but of forbidden love? What secrets lie in Bo’s dreams? And will Mattie find the courage to face her uncertain future . . . or will she simply run away?
My take on this book:
Mattie Deiner's story is full of emotional twists providing for a must read story. Mattie is a recently widowed Amish mother with two children. When one of her children becomes ill she does what anyone would do she takes him to the doctor but when that doctor thinks that she has been abusing the child Mattie finds herself dealing with Child Protective Services and the person handling her case is Bo Lambright. Can Bo figure out what is going on without getting his heart involved?
I read a lot of Amish fiction and this one was a bit different, because Mattie finds herself being scrutinized by CPS which is an Englisher agency. Mattie's character was so easy to empathize with, the author made me feel like I was actually reading about a real person, it was easy to envision her heartaches and hurts, while I couldn't imagine being in her shoes but the author allowed me to feel as if I had stepped into them for the length of this story. It was interesting to see the differences between Amish and Englishers ideals and how that affected the way that many looked at Mattie. It was heart wrenching to see how Mattie was treated and it kept me hoping that all would work out in the end. While this is the third book in a series it can easily be read as a stand alone work. If you're looking for an Amish story that is so much more than an average romance this book is one that you should try.
