Oregon Mail Order Brides series: Book One.
Dear Reader: This is a sweet, heartwarming, full length mail order bride historical romance novel with a happy ending. Set in western cowboy Oregon in 1886.
Pale, pretty, dark-haired Ellie Bates lost her entire family to typhoid and narrowly escaped death from the sickness herself. Now she finds herself as an unpaid servant for her deceased brother's wife, struggling with dizzy fits that send her spinning. When Ellie finds out she is to be forced into marriage with a vile snake of a man, she knows she must escape now or die a slow living death. On impulse Ellie takes a leap into the unknown and advertises herself as a live-in housekeeper in a national newspaper.
Tall, rugged, handsome cowboy Jared Ford lost his parents in a train crash fourteen years ago. To cope with the pain of his loss he threw himself into managing the vast family ranch, with only his grandmother and a bunch of entertaining comical dogs to keep him company. When Jared's adorable but interfering Irish grandmother decides he needs young female company, she goes ahead and orders him a mail order bride from the newspaper for his birthday. The only problem is, her eyesight fails her and she thinks Ellie’s advert is for a mail order bride.
So begins a tale of tender, sweet and true love between an unlikely pair. Ellie finds herself falling headfirst into love with Jared, but how will she cope when Jared’s cousin turns up on his doorstep proposing an arranged marriage to his ideal woman? Ellie must decide if she can stand by and watch Jared marry someone else. Jared has to learn that real love means loving a woman’s heart, but will he learn his lesson in time to claim Ellie as his own?

My take on this book:
Mail Order Love by Amy Blakelear introduces us to Elizabeth (Ellie) Bates who finds herself in a precarious position. After the death of her family to typhoid,a disease that almost took her life as well, she finds herself without any real options except working for her deceased brother's tyrant of a wife, in Boston. When she learns that she is to be married off to a sleazy man in exchange for paying off her sister-in-laws debts she knows that she has to do something. A spur of the moment decision placing an ad in the paper stating that she is looking for a live-in house keeping job is really the only hope she has. When she gets an answer from someone living in Oregon she knows her prayers have been answered. Little does she know that the person who answered the ad is looking for a mail order bride for her grandson Jared Ford. With a mix up like this one can only guess how things might turn out! One things for certain Ellie is going to prove her worth as a housekeeper so that the Ford's will allow her to stay, that is until her heart becomes involved! How can she stay when he doesn't feel the same, but where will she go? Read Mail Order Love by Amy Blakelear to find out!
Mail Order Love is such a delightful twist on the historical mail order bride genre. I found myself hooked from the beginning with this one, rich storytelling easily pulled me into the plot and the attention to detail allowed me to feel like I had stepped back in time. More than a few of the characters in Mail Order Love truly endeared themselves to me. I found myself totally connecting with Ellie and her plight, and the misunderstanding that had her heading to Oregon really had me wondering how things might work out! She made more than a few blunders that were sometimes funny, but also cast her in a very realistic light. Grammy Ford had to be one of my favorite characters, she was such a kind person, just what Ellie needed. The fact that she raised wolfhounds was quite interesting and I really enjoyed reading about Eric and Fairy, I could just imagine these to giant, loveable dogs! Mail Order Love is a wonderfully written historical fiction that begs to be read in one sitting because the main characters worm their way into your heart and insist that you hear their story! Mail order bride fans are going to love this one, but anyone looking for a sweet read, with endearing characters will find this a delight as well!
