The war is over, but her struggle is just beginning.
Charlotte Fraser returns to her late father’s once-flourishing rice plantation on the Waccamaw River, determined to continue growing the special kind of rice known as Carolina Gold. But Fairhaven Plantation is in ruins, the bondsmen are free, and money is scarce.
To make ends meet, Charlotte reluctantly accepts a position as tutor to the young daughters of Nicholas Betancourt, heir to the neighboring Willowood Plantation. Then Nick’s quest to prove his ownership of Willowood sends Charlotte on a dangerous journey that reveals an old family mystery—and threatens all that she holds dear.
Inspired by the life of a 19th century woman rice planter, Carolina Gold continues Dorothy Love’s winning tradition of weaving together mystery, romance, and rich historical detail, bringing to life the story of one young woman’s struggle to restore her ruined world.

My take on this book:
The cover of this one certainly caught my eye but it's the historical aspects that certainly pulled me in and kept me turning the pages to find out what would happen with the characters, especially because the story was inspired by a real woman whose life inspired this novel.
Carolina Gold pulls readers back to 1868 where we meet twenty-three year old Charlotte Fraser who finds herself worrying about how she will make it in the world after the death of her father. Her father's attorney encourages her to find a husband but she is determined to return to Fairhaven, the family plantation and do what her father taught her to do, plant rice! She also plans on writing articles for The New York Globe to help supplement her income. When she returns Fairhaven she realizes it isn't going to be easy, with money dwindling she accepts an offer to teach the two daughters of neighbor Nicholas Betancourt. When Nicholas leaves his daughters in the care of Charlotte and doesn't return she fears the worst. Where is he and will he come back?
Historical fiction fans that love the civil war era are going to find this book a real treat to read. The southern feel of the story was great. Charlotte was such a strong, determined character, who really didn't take the easy way out! The author provides some interesting history within the pages of this story, I found it fascinating to learn about rice plantations something I don't think I have ever read about before. The descriptions really brought the setting to life, as well as the characters. I could just imagine Marie-Claire and Anne-Louise. Great characters and rich historical detail made this book an enjoyable read for me.
