It’s 1971, and Betsie Troyer’s peaceful and predictable life is about to become anything but.
When their parents flee the Amish, nineteen-year-old Betsie and her seventeen-year-old sister Sadie are distraught. Under the dubious guidance of a doting aunt, the girls struggle to keep the secret, praying their parents will return before anyone learns the truth—a truth that may end all hopes of Betsie’s marriage to Charley Yoder.

My take on this book:
I always get excited whenever I find a new to me author writing Amish fiction. Well the excitement was well founded with Stephanie Reed's "The Bargain." Sure there is romance, but its a story with so much more than that. The time in which the book took place was something was different than most "Amish" stories that I have read because it takes us back to 1971 and the Vietnam War. Another unique twist was that the Troyer parents decide to leave the faith, normally it's the child that wants to venture out into the Englisher world. Betsie and her sister Sadie have grown up in the Plain City community and when their parents decide to leave the faith what will happen?
There were so many interesting things going on with this plot that really kept it moving along. I was surprised at some of the things the Bishop allowed but honestly that's what made this story unique, it really doesn't stay inside the "Amish" box instead it took my imagination on a fresh path. Overall, I found each of the main characters easily wormed their way into my heart and left me thinking about them long after I turned the last page in this book. While this is my first time reading anything by Stephanie Reed I certainly hope it won't be my last. I look forward to reading the next book in The Plain City Peace series!
