Born in the midst of the hardships of The Great Depression, Rose grew up in Berlin, Ohio, in the arms of a loving Amish family. But she is overwhelmed by self-doubt when she learns the truth of her birth. She was born Englisch and abandoned when her family moved West in search of work. Was she meant to be Amish or would she have been better off growing up with her own kind—Englischers? And was her intended’s gift of discovering her birth family given out of love or fear?
Don’t miss award-winning author Tricia Goyer’s first Christmas novella.
My take on this book:
Rose Yoder is almost twenty years old and thought she would have been married to her beau Jonathan Fisher, but when he decided to leave his community and enlist for military service she is no longer sure that she can marry him because he has been out in the world with the English. She believes that one compromise can lead to another and soon one might lose their Amish faith. When she finds out something about her birth, it has her questioning where she truly belongs, and the ideas that she has formed. Can Rose and Jonathan overcome the obstacles that seem to be holding them apart?Wow, "A Christmas Gift For Rose" is a great kick off for my holiday reading season. While classified a novella, this little book had plenty going on. I found the characters interesting. Rose especially had plenty going on, finding out about her past had her questioning who she really was, but truthfully deep down she already knew! Jonathan also went against the grain to join up with the military getting to serve while helping instead of fighting.I really loved the story and when I realized that it was actually based on a true story well, it made it even more special.Overall there were emotional ups and downs within the pages of this one, and the author does an amazing job of allowing the reader to feel those emotions.Far from predictable I wasn't sure how this story would wind up, and couldn't read fast enough to find out!Amish fans are going to love this story, but anyone looking for a great read that deals with adoption, WWII, God's grace and love along with a bit of romance will certainly enjoy this one as well. I can easily predict that Ms. Goyer has a best seller on her hands with "A Christmas Gift For Rose!"
Great review! I'm currently reading this book and really enjoying it! =)
