Recent books about heaven and hell have aroused the interest of committed Christians and curious seekers alike. But the wide range of viewpoints has also created confusion and left many people wondering what they are to believe. This user-friendly guide presents the most popular views on heaven, hell, purgatory, judgment, and related topics, followed by brief, easy-to-follow analysis. Readers will be equipped to make their own well-informed decisions about questions like these:
  • What happens when we die? Where did the idea of purgatory come from?
  • Will our bodies be resurrected someday? If so, does cremation offend God?
  • Will unbelievers be judged by God and  punished in hell forever? Or will they be annihilated? What about those who never heard the gospel message?
This summary of the latest Evangelical teaching and traditional mainstream scholarship provides readers with tools to assess each position in the light of Scripture.

My take on this book:

Ever wonder "What's The Truth About Heaven and Hell?" Well Douglas A. Jacoby tackles not only these two topics but also answers a plethora of other questions that not only deal with afterlife, but also the interpretation of the Bible as well. He breaks his book down into six parts providing eighteen chapters of insightful  information that touch on many topics relevant to the afterlife, not only providing answers but also providing scripture reference that one can read for themselves. At the end of each chapter there is an "In Brief" section. While some of the "In Briefs" are comprised of questions that will have the reader contimplating what they believe, other "In Brief" sections are like a powerpoint paragraph that really hones in on the meat of the topic for the  particular chapter that it is included in.

As someone who studies my Bible daily I have often wondered about Heaven and Hell and what the truth really is. I was anxious to read what Douglas A. Jacoby had to say on these relevant topics, and honestly while I didn't agree with some of his answers, his ideals really challenged me to consider what I really believe, and where those beliefs came from. One of my favorite sections of this book was part five which answers questions about topics such as Angels, Ghosts, and near death experiences just to name a few. Overall he does a great job of tackling tough subjects that don't always have distinct answers. His writing style is very conversational and easy to understand, and he doesn't try to push ideals, instead he shines the light on several possibilities and allows the reader to come to their own conclusions, which was very refreshing. When I picked up the book, I read it thru in one sitting because I was so interested in what he was sharing, but now I am rereading it at a much more leisurely pace and using it as a Bible study.
Anyone who has ever wondered what happens to us once we die might just find the answers they are looking for in "What's The Truth About Heaven and Hell."
