Nate, a mid-level investment banker on Wall Street, and his longtime girlfriend Emily can no longer afford their cramped apartment on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Tired of trying to keep up with their jet-set friends, they jump at a job offer for Nate in Newport, Rhode Island – complete with a bucolic, small, and comparatively affordable new house. They pack their belongings tightly in their Jeep Cherokee and head north to start a new life. Yet less than an hour after arriving in Newport, the car is stolen and they’re left with nothing but the keys to their empty house and their bawling ten-month-old son.

Over the three-day weekend that follows, as Emily and Nate watch their meager pile of cash dwindle and tensions increase, the secrets they kept from each other in the city emerge, threatening to destroy their hope for a shared future.

A story about losing it all, the complexities of family histories, tainted gene pools, art theft, architecture, and the mad grab for the American Dream, The Exiles bravely explores the weight of our pasts—and whether or not it's truly possible to start over.

My take on this book:
Nate is an investment banker on Wall Street and after eleven years working in advertising Emily is now a stay at home mommy to their ten month old son Trevor.Thing is their life in Manhattan is becoming something that they can't keep up with financially so when Nate gets a job offer in Newport, Rhode Island they decide to move. With the moving truck packed they fill their Jeep with everything they will need to live for about a week in their new house until the movers arrive. When their Jeep is stolen though they find themselves in financial straights with only $84.16 cents to their name until Tuesday when the banks open. As we learn about Nate and Emily we see that both are keeping secrets from each other. Will they be able to survive those secrets and figure out what really is important in life?

This was just a so so book for me. Nate and Emily were two characters that I had a difficult time connecting with, they seemed superficial. That said once the story of Nate's dad came to light I found myself becoming invested in the story wanting to know how things would work out. Overall, a story where I didn't readily connect with the main characters but still found it a worthwhile read anyway.
