January 1, 2013 Quilt (Book 1)

The Moses Quilt is a contemporary novel that bridges racial and generational divides. With a realistic and compassionate look into a twenty-first-century dilemma, multiple award-winning author Kathi Macias introduces readers to a confused and apprehensive young woman, Mazie Hartford. Facing major decisions about the love of her life and her future, she must also wrestle with a nagging question about her family's past. She finds the answer to her questions in a most unexpected way—her great-grandmother's Moses quilt. As her great-grandmother begins to explain how each patch represents a story of courage and freedom, Mazie must decide if she has the courage and freedom to overcome her own personal fears and prejudices.

My take on this book:
"The Moses Quilt" is a story that will capture the heart and provide you with a surprising yet satisfying ending!

Mazie Hartford is a 24 year old whose life seems to be falling right into place, she recently finished college, and is set to take a job in the fall. Added to that her boyfriend Edward, a lawyer in his fathers firm has ask her to marry him. Thing is she has been dragging her feet, hesitant to say yes. Her great-grandmother moved in with Mazie and her mother five years ago, leaving the deep South for California. Now at the age of 93 her great-grandmother Mimi  knows that her time left is coming to an end and wants to pass on a family heirloom to her namesake Mazie. The heirloom is a Moses quilt and along with the quilt is the telling of the history behind the quilt. Perhaps Mimi's story of family history will help Mazie make up her mind about her future.

There are two stories going on in the pages of this book. The contemporary romance between Mazie and Edward, which happens to be an interracial  relationship. The secondary story is the story behind the Moses Quilt, and that was truly the stand out story for me, because with Mimi's story we learn about Harriet Tubman. We learn where she came from, the cruel treatment she endured and ultimately why she was so adamant to see her people be free. I always enjoy getting a history lesson along with a fictional read and that's just what I found woven into the pages of "The Moses Quilt." While the romance was ok it was Mimi and her story that made this book a real winner for me. A great way to learn a bit about African American History.

A complimentary copy of this book was provided in exchange for an honest review.
