October 1, 2012 The Aidan Mysteries (Book 1)

The hamlet of Pennant Melangell consists of a church and a few cottages and lies in a mountainous part of North Wales that is so remote that it is, even today, only barely accessible to cars. It is the ancient pilgrimage site for the medieval Saint Melangell and is still visited by those seeking healing.
The Davison family has come to Pennant Melangell seeking spiritual refuge as their family faces the reality of Jenny Davison's terminal cancer. Jenny and Aidan have visited before, but this is the first time they have brought their daughter, seven-year-old Melangell, to the place which inspired her name.

My take on this book:
Jenny Davison is dealing with terminal cancer so she along with her husband Aidan along with their seven year old daughter Melangell decide to get away and visit the newly built House Of Hare so that they can come to terms with Jenny's prognosis. What should have been a quite time filled with relaxation and reflection becomes anything but, when a murder takes place, and the Davison's find themselves involved!

I am a fan of cozy mysteries and that's what this novel really reminded me of. While the beginning of the story drug just a bit for me, once I got invested in the characters it really zoomed along.I really enjoyed getting to know the Davison's especially Melangell, she was such a smart little girl who seemed wise beyond her years.  The issue that the Davison family was dealing with was sad,but the author wove hopefulness into the story as well. A mystery that isn't easily solved made this book a page turner for me, there were several twists that kept me guessing as to who-dun-it.

Overall, if you enjoy a well written mystery, that also deals realistically with a terminal illness, you just might enjoy this one. The fact that the author's writing brings the Whales countryside to life making me feel as if I actually spent time there was an added bonus for me. Great beginning for a new mystery series. I was pleasantly surprised by this new to me author's work and look forward to reading more from her.
