My take on this book:
Historical romance is one of my favorite genres to read and when the author is able to weave in a few positive messages or historical facts that make me feel as if I am actually getting a bit of a history lesson well then that makes the book a must read for me, and that's just what we get in "A Love Forbidden."
The year is 1879 and the book is set in the Colorado Rockies , and gives us the story of twenty-one year old Shiloh Wainright and Jesse Blackwater .Shiloh has signed a contract to teach for the White River Indian Agency,and looks forward to teaching the Ute children white men's ways while helping them remember their own culture. She is in for a surprise when she reconnects with her childhood friend Jesse Blackwater. Soon their friendship threatens to turn into more, but things are complicated because Jesse is 1/2 Indian,.add to this the fact that Indians and whites are on the verge of battle, and you can't help but wonder if a relationship can ever work between these two.
The author weaves a story that easily captured my attention. I have always found this time period in the west intriguing.The author deals with the time period where the US Government made promises to the Native Americans but didn't always keep them. Shiloh was a compassionate caring person,and Jesse seemed like someone who was caught between two worlds.I enjoyed watching the feelings grow between the two characters. While I enjoyed the characters for me it was the historical elements that made the book a real winner. The author describes the tensions that are going on between the Whites and Native Americans,and allows the reader to see the prejudices that took place during that time in history. Anyone who enjoys reading historical fiction that weaves together romance and an inspirational message will certainly want to check out this book. While this is the second book in the Heart Of The Rockies series I feel as if it can be read as a stand alone work.

ReplyDeleteI have really enjoyed the fact that both of Kathleen Morgan's "Heart of the Rockies" books have given a lot of deep weight to the relationships within the book. I read a lot of Christian Fiction, and many of those volumes have a love story but it is explored more casually or with the classic star-crossed lovers theme instead of the real nitty gritty of love being examined.
ReplyDelete"A Love Forbidden" really gets into the nitty gritty of the friend and maybe-more relationship between Shiloh Wainwright and her childhood friend Jesse Blackwater (who she runs across after nine years when she accepts a teaching position through an agency attempting to help the Ute Indians take up white-man ways).
