Book Description
Sadie Wagner has always been devoted to her family. So when her stepfather is injured and can't work, she decides to leave home and accept a position as a clerk at the mercantile in Goldtree, Kansas. Goldtree also offers the opportunity to use her God-given singing talent--though the promised opera house is far different from what she imagined. With her family needing every cent she can provide, Sadie will do anything to keep her job.
Thad McKane comes to Goldtree at the request of the town council. The town has been plagued by bootlegging operations, and Thad believes he can find the culprit. After he earns enough money doing sheriff work, he wants to use it to pay for his training to become a minister.
Thad is immediately attracted to the beautiful singer who performs in Asa Baxter's unusual opera house, but when he hears her practicing bawdy tunes, he begins to wonder if she's far less innocent than she seems. And when Sadie appears to be part of the very crimes he's come to investigate, is there any hope the love blossoming between them will survive?
My take on this book:
At the age of twenty-two Sadie Wagner was a woman, but she still hadn't found the freedom to do what she wanted most. After an accident where her step-father is injured she knows someone needs to help provide for the family and doesn't mind being the one to do it. When she receives a letter from her step cousin Sid who lives in Goldtree, Kansas telling her he has secured her a job clerking in a mercantile she thinks its an answer to a prayer, and something else that he mentions is that there is an opera house and since Sadie's dream is to sing she thinks it might just be her chance to provide for her family and sing at the same time. When she arrives in Goldtree, she soon meets the new sheriff, Thad McKane, whose real dream is to become a minister but takes the job of sheriff to ferret out the culprits responsible for bootlegging, because Kansas is a dry state. She soon realizes that the opera house isn't at all what she thought, and to complicate things even more Sid has feelings for her, but she is drawn to Thad. Can a romance survive between the sheriff and Sadie, even when he begins to suspect that she might be involved in the very crimes he has been hired to take care of?
I was drawn to Sadie's character from the first pages of the book. Her goodness easily comes across in the story, and she didn't hesitate to help out her family. I could easily understand her homesickness. The secondary characters really made this book stand out. The Baxter twins and their brother Asa were often funny and oh so easy to visualize. I thought Sid the step-cousin was a bit different, his actions were odd although I sort of chalked it up to being jealous. While there were christian themes running thru the book they weren't overdone or preachy.
Overall, I really enjoyed this quick read, and found myself laughing on more than a few occasions. A great historical fiction/romance that is well worth reading!
