Product Description:

Sometimes when we look back, we are able to see ahead
Following her mother’s funeral, and on the verge of her own midlife crisis, widow Anna Larson returns to the home of her youth to sort out her parents’ belongings, as well as her own turbulent life.

For the first time since childhood, Anna embraces her native heritage, despite the disdain of her vicious mother-in-law.
By transforming her old family home on the banks of the Siuslaw River into The Inn at Shining Waters, Anna hopes to create a place of healing—a place where guests experience peace, grace, and new beginnings. Starting with her own family . . .

My take on this book:
Anna (Larson) Gunderson hadn't been back to her childhood home in eight years, not since the funeral for her father. But another death has brought her back home, the death of her mother. Anna is a widower, and she and her seventeen year old daughter Lauren live with Anna's mother-in-law who is less than kind to Anna, which makes for a tense relationship. She had intended to make it a short trip but soon feels the tug of the peaceful setting of her parents home and decides she wants to stay and turn the home into an inn. Will she be able to make a success of it, and break free from her mother-in-laws hold, and will she and her daughter Lauren be able to repair their relationship?

When I pick up a Melody Carlson novel I know its going to be a great read with a positive inspirational message and this one was no different. I found myself drawn into the life of Anna,it was so nice to see how Anna's character changed  as the story unfolded. The author easily transitions between past and present allowing us to learn of Anna's childhood and the people who shaped her life. Learning about her Native American heritage thru the stories her grandmother told was quite interesting, although Anna's mother wanted nothing to do with her heritage, and tried to discourage Anna.I thought the secondary characters added to the story, giving us that down home feel.
What a great beginning for Melody Carlson's new series titled The Inn At Shining Waters.  Recommended!
