My take on this book:
Kevin Parson is driving home one day from seminary school, when he gets a call on his cell phone from a man named "Slater". Slater gives him a riddle to solve, and gives him three minutes to come up with the answer, otherwise his car will explode. Slater also tells him, that if he will call the media and confess his sin that the game will end! Well Kevin has no idea what sin Slater is talking about, so you guess it, the car explodes!
The local police headed up my a media hungry Detective Milton, is soon joined by FBI agent Jennifer Peters whose brother Roy, was killed three months ago by the Riddle Killer, a killer who operated very similarly to "Slater",leaving a riddle to be solved and when it wasn't someone died! Is the Riddle Killer back, or is "Slater" a copycat ?
We also meet Samantha, Kevin's childhood friend. She works for the CBI, and comes to help out her old friend! As Slater keeps tormenting them with riddles to solve and horrific consequences it literally becomes a race against the clock to try and figure out the next move. Can they figure out who this madman really is, and stop him before its to late!
I really enjoyed this book! It was truly a psychological thriller, with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader on the edge of their seat. It was very easy to sympathize with Kevin because of his childhood, not only being orphaned at the age of one, but being raised in the craziness of Balinda's world. Jennifer was determined to keep his safe, something she couldn't do for her brother. When I thought I knew who Slater was, the author throws us a total curve ball, giving an ending that I really didn't expect!
While this book was originally published in 2003 I somehow missed it. I would easily say fans of mystery/ thrillers would enjoy this story, and I like the fact that there isn't any profanity used. Its great to find an author who can write a good thriller and keep it clean.

I didn't think this one of his Dekker's best. I'd read better by him.
ReplyDeleteFreda, I have only read two of his works, this one and Immanuel's Veins and hands down I liked this one much better. Would you share which book of his you liked best, I want to read something else by him, and would love your opinion. Thanks for dropping by.
ReplyDeleteBlink was also a favorite of mine. Dekker can be a little out there, but I just can't stay away from his books. The Martyr's Song series is very good.
ReplyDeleteRBCLibrary I will look for those books, I wasn't sure what would be good. Reviews for his book are somewhat all over the place,I really liked Three better than Immanuel's Veins,I liked it because it was so out there, the style reminded me of Bentley Little although he doesn't put the Christian message in his, they are just straight horror thats really far out!
